Tips and Info to Know Before Having Prenatal cfDNA Screening

  • Prenatal cfDNA screening appears to be the most accurate screening test for Down syndrome, better than the traditional screening tests such as quad screen, first trimester screening, etc.
  • Prenatal cfDNA screening has some advantages and some disadvantages when compared to other screening tests in terms of what each test screens for, testing cost, etc.
  • Prenatal cfDNA screening is not “yes or no”.  It is a screening test and false positives and false negatives do occur with this testing.
  • If your Prenatal cfDNA screening comes back positive or high risk, amniocentesis is recommended to give you definitive answers, if you desire.
  • Normal prenatal cfDNA screening results decreases the chance of the conditions screened but does not rule them out completely.
  • Prenatal cfDNA screening does not test for all chromosome conditions or birth defects.
  • Prenatal cfDNA screening may reveal other conditions in the mom or the developing baby that are not listed as being screened for.
  • Prenatal cfDNA screening is an optional test.
